The University is renowned for its achievements in research and innovation – underpinning everything that we do and ensuring that our students are exposed to the latest thinking and ground breaking technologies.
These pages outline some of the successes that we have achieved, spanning a broad range of disciplines.
Overview of Research
With over 450 Research Degree students and more than 1500 academic staff engaged in research activities, the University has built a strong reputation for delivering challenging programmes and innovative solutions. This reputation allows De Montfort University to stand alongside traditional centres of research excellence.
Our activities have allowed us to become the most successful post-1992 research institution in terms of both the national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and in obtaining funding and grants from a range of other organisations, such as Research Councils, charities and government agencies.
Research focuses on a number of key disciplines grouped around the faculty areas of Art and Design, Business and Law, Technology (Computing Sciences and Engineering), Health and Life Sciences and Humanities. There are also a number of multi-disciplinary Independent Research Centres and Institutions located in applied research facilities that are among the best in the UK.
Our commitment to cross-functional projects stands us apart from many traditional research-intensive universities, undertaking studies that target specific social and commercial challenges of today, as well as encompassing more theoretical experiments that will pave the way for the future.
Since the 2001 RAE, the University has consistently secured approximately £10 million in external research grants and contracts per year. These include strong research and development partnerships with commercial organisations such as SEMELAB, Rolls-Royce Plc and QinetiQ.
