MSc Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Home Page Image

The MSc Pharmaceutical Biotechnology course has been specifically designed to give graduates a competitive advantage in gaining employment in any biopharmaceutical field; these include large global biopharmaceutical companies, small to medium biotechnology companies, academic institutions and research institutions allied to human health.

The course provides a response to the rapidly expanding field in the mode of discovery and production of biopharmaceuticals and addresses the lack of pertinent skills in the workforce.

This course has a high practical content, preparing graduates to quickly enter an industrial setting.

It offers a unique ‘bench to bedside’ approach, from understanding the development of biopharmaceutical treatments to verification for non-toxicity required prior to clinical trials.

The course encompasses many of the manufacturing systems (i.e. bacteria, baker’s yeast, insect, plant and mammalian cells) used for the commercial production of biopharmaceuticals.

It offers a strong focus on practical aspects of pharmaceutical industry applications unlike most other biotechnology courses, which provide mostly general theory on specific living cell-based (bio-) technologies.

DMU’s Leicester School of Pharmacy has a unique combination of expertise with staff having cross-disciplinary interests in Pharmacy, Biology and Chemistry.

Many of the staff have spent time in industry and are aware of the demands of this environment. The areas in which we specialise are at the forefront of current and future commercial development globally.

The Health & Life Science Faculty has received major government and private funding for the development of its laboratories, as well as further equipment funding allowing it to purchase of equipment that matches that found in the best industrial labs.
